The Night Sky That Made Our KPIs Feel Smaller

In a professional life, spreadsheets take a major role in defining the thought process; in a professional life, dashboards define what are the measures for success; in a professional life, KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) will manage how we measure our success and move forward.

To achieve a target we have set, we obsess about the target metrics and try to optimize them; therefore, every decision we make will be analyzed and evaluated based on how it would be perceived in our quarterly results.

These moments can be undone in a short time. The moment I experienced was not on a boardroom table, nor was it on a strategy workshop at a luxury resort; it was a moment when I found myself looking up at the vast sky and realizing how small all of my KPIs are.

This reflection is on how stargazing retreats, reflections of leadership, and developing perspective on an experience gained when far away are enabling redefining what we believe constitutes success.

When Leadership Needs Distance, Not Data

The new model for leadership developed by Watson (2023) is evidence-based and uses the capabilities of data to enhance how leaders make decisions. It is creating an environment of clarity and efficiency for leaders that also creates an imbalance in the way leaders work, as there is rarely time for leaders to step back and consider their decisions. Leadership reflexive travel is a unique option for leaders, as it takes the place of traditional leadership retreats that are often done in uncomfortable offices, using boring tables and conference rooms. Instead of usual whiteboards, charts, and presentations, this type of travel provides leaders with:

  • Quiet instead of sound-bites.
  • Natural environments instead of artificial sounds,
  • Less stress instead of pressure to perform.

The result is a more expansive process of thinking occurs naturally in this type of setting.

Why Stargazing Retreats Create Unmatched Clarity

Observing a night sky that has not been dimmed or marred by artificial light can provide a depth of grounding to humanity. When people attend stargazing retreats, they are not doing so for entertainment; rather, they are using the stargazing to face themselves. They are facing the timescales of life, which are beyond fiscal years and quarters,

The burden of ambition becomes more valuable and easier to manage once you remove it from your shoulders upon looking into the night sky.

As your ego evaporates and curiosity expands for a time, the organic conversation around leadership begins to shift from "What do we build next?" to "Why are we building?"

This is what building perspective allows us to do as human beings.

KPIs vs. the Cosmos

KPIs are important to hold organizations accountable and align them; however, by only looking at progress through the lens of KPIs, leaders may forget why they exist in the first place.

As part of my own journey of getting closer to the heavens by spending an evening sharing thoughts with the stars, it was clear that our conversation quickly changed from talking about:

To talking about:

  • Legacy
  • Long-term impact
  • People over processes

In essence, the stars did not deny the existence of KPIs; however, they helped position the KPIs in the grand scheme of things, and that is what made the difference.

The Role of Environment in Leadership Thinking

Leadership is highly impacted by the environment; with the environment shaping one's mentality. In high-pressure business environments, the speed of decision making is very quick, but the scope of those decisions is minimal. Creativity exists in a tactical manner rather than an expansive manner. In nature-focused or remote environments, mental activity slows down, and as a result, new ideas can develop and evolve a great deal. Strategy now takes on a component of emotional intelligence. Therefore, more and more leaders are choosing to participate in leadership reflection retreats that take place in stargazing areas and open-sky, rural environments.

Perspective Building Is a Skill, Not a Luxury

In the past, experiencing distance from your organization by being away from it physically, emotionally or mentally caused frustration and anxiety for leaders. Now, leaders are able to develop perspective building skills that make them more effective leaders by returning from distance to their organization and having a better understanding of the organization's purpose and direction. The night sky is a place of wonder and awe; however, it does not provide any answers, but rather asks leaders better questions.

Why Luxury Isn’t Always the Answer

It's rather interesting that most luxury resorts do not provide this type of deep reflection.

Why not?

Luxury often distracts us from our moments. For example, the following are common determinants of true perspective-building:

  • Over-programmed Itineraries
  • Over-stimulated Environments
  • Over-serviced Experiences

True perspective-building flourishes in simplicity. In contrast, stargazing retreats can replicate the luxury experience, but replace it with the following:

  • Silence
  • Stillness
  • Authentic Connection

You cannot purchase these experiences; you can only provide an environment that allows for these types of experiences.

Stargazing Retreats and Emotional Reset

Emotional recalibration is an important benefit obtained through electricity using Stargazing Retreats. Leaders understand:

  • Not all decisions require urgency
  • Not all problems require instant solutions
  • Not all successes require affirmation

The infinite reaches of the sky demonstrate that leading means being a steward, not a controller. An emotional reset enhances:

  • Decision greatness
  • Empathy for the Team
  • Long-Term Vision

Why Organizations Are Rethinking Leadership Travel

A worldwide trend of revamping offsite and retreat programming is occurring across every sector; a move from the previous model of:

  • Travel based on productivity
  • Travel based on reflection

Leadership reflection based Travel or travel designed specifically for leadership development focuses on:

  • Less activity and more significance
  • Less presentation and more presence
  • Less metric and more mindfulness.

The STARGAZING Retreat fits this movement perfectly.

Perspective Building Changes Organizational Culture

The Change in Awareness to develop a leader's awareness is transforming the leader personally and as a leader of a group, not by major transformations, they are being changed for the long term.

By learning to:

  • Listen more
  • React less
  • Delegate Trust
  • And Lead Calmly

These are all behaviours that are being practiced across teams, with these behaviour changes creating more positive workplace environments.

Once perspective is built, it is not possible to lose it.

Why the Night Sky Is the Ultimate Teacher

The stars give lessons that no conference speaker will ever give us, like:

  • Patience (stars appear slowly)
  • Humility (we are not the center of everything)
  • Continuity (the stars and everything in the universe are part of something larger).

These lessons are priceless in leadership.

Final Reflection

KPIs aren't gone, they're softened by the moonlight. No longer just the end product, KPIs (key performance indicators) now become a means and a method of achieving your business objectives. In this new normal, rather than a fleeting moment in time, KPIs provide a perspective that surpasses all other performance cycles.

On occasion, the greatest strategic meetings occur devoid of PowerPoint, calendaring, and technology; only the stars will guide you, and silence will enable you, and through these two elements will allow you to create your vision.
