Are Tier-2 Indian Cities the Next Big MICE Destinations for 2027?

India’s MICE industry is entering a new phase and the next wave of growth may be from outside the traditional business hubs. Cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, Chandigarh, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Ahmedabad, and Coimbatore are getting more corporate meetings, incentive trips, conferences and exhibitions. As businesses look ahead to 2027, Tier-2 cities are emerging as practical and experience-led alternatives to established MICE destinations such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Cost Savings Are Fueling The Change

Cost is one of the greatest advantages of Tier-2 cities. Accommodation, venue rentals, local transportation and hospitality services can be cheaper than in India’s biggest metros. This way companies can use their MICE budgets to deliver better experiences, upgraded venues, entertainment and employee engagement instead of spending a disproportionate amount of money on logistics.

For example, companies planning larger conferences or incentive programs may find Tier-2 destinations particularly attractive because of this cost advantage. In 2027, being able to offer a premium experience without the price tag of a metropolis could be a huge deciding factor.

Better Experiences, Less Congestion

Today’s corporate events are not confined to conference rooms and business hotels. Companies increasingly want places that offer employees and clients the opportunity to do something beyond the event itself. Tier-2 cities have an edge here naturally, with their unique food, culture, architecture, crafts, heritage and local experiences.

Jaipur is a combination of business events with heritage properties and cultural experiences, while Kochi has coastal properties with a strong cultural identity. Similarly, Lucknow, Indore can introduce regional cuisine, heritage and local experiences into corporate programs. That combination can transform a routine conference into a more memorable destination experience.

Infrastructure Is Beginning To Catch Up

Infrastructure has been the biggest issue with Tier-2 MICE destinations traditionally. The gap is narrowing steadily. Smaller cities are becoming easier to get to for domestic and international delegates because of improved airports, highways, hotels, convention facilities and connectivity.

The growth of business hotels and dedicated event venues is also widening the options available to organizers. Infrastructure improvements may allow event planners to consider cities that were previously discounted due to limitations in access or accommodation.

Incentive Travel, A Great Opportunity

Incentive travel may be especially well suited to tier-2 cities. Unlike traditional business meetings, incentive programs are very dependent on destination charm and unique experiences. Employees and channel partners are more likely to appreciate a trip that feels like a genuine escape, instead of another work visit.

Therefore, attractions with heritage properties, nature, adventure, wellness, cuisine and culture can be a powerful incentive option. This could encourage companies to look beyond predictable destinations and create more experiential programs for 2027.

Sustainability Could Boost Their Appeal

Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration for corporate events. More responsible event programs can be put together by organizers with shorter local journeys, smaller venues, regional sourcing and greater use of local suppliers.

Destinations that are tier-2 in status can capitalize on this trend by marketing the local artisans, cuisine, entertainment and hospitality providers. Supporting local businesses can enhance authenticity for an event and generate economic value for the destination.

What Would Prevent Them?

There will be challenges to the change. Limited large-scale convention infrastructure, inconsistent connectivity, a lack of specialized event vendors and variations in service standards can still make planning a challenge. Before confirming a destination, the organizers need to assess transportation, accommodation capacity, emergency services, venue capabilities and supplier reliability.

So the opportunity is not just in the smaller city to be picked . It’s about choosing places with the right level of infrastructure, accessibility and experience.

2027: The Year Of The Reckoning

Tier-2 Indian cities may not replace Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru as the country’s key MICE hubs. Instead they are likely to add to the established destinations by offering something different, such as better value, distinctive experiences and opportunities for more personalized corporate programs.

For business and MICE planners, 2027 may be the year that destination selection moves from choosing the biggest city to choosing the right experience. With India’s MICE ecosystem expanding, the next big destination might not be a metro, it could be a city that has been waiting just outside the limelight.
